How It Works
Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. It is calculated as the square root of the variance. A low standard deviation indicates that values tend to be close to the mean, while a high standard deviation indicates that values are spread out.

The population standard deviation (σ) is used when the data represents the entire population. The sample standard deviation (s) is used when the data is a sample of a larger population, using n−1 in the denominator (Bessel's correction) to correct for bias.
