Calculate slope and line equations
How It Works
Slope (or gradient) measures the steepness and direction of a line. It is calculated as the ratio of the vertical change to the horizontal change between two points on a line.
Slope (or gradient) measures the steepness and direction of a line, denoted by m. The larger the absolute value, the steeper the line. A positive slope (m > 0) means the line is increasing (upwards left to right). A negative slope (m < 0) means the line is decreasing. A horizontal line has slope 0, while a vertical line has undefined slope.
Slope is essentially 'rise over run' — the change in height over the change in horizontal distance. The distance between two points forms the hypotenuse of a right triangle with Δx and Δy as the legs. The angle of incline θ satisfies tan(θ) = m.
