How It Works
Free required minimum distribution (RMD) calculator to determine the minimum amount that must be withdrawn from retirement accounts each year.
Required minimum distributions (RMDs) are mandatory withdrawals that must be taken from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and other qualified retirement accounts starting at age 73 (72 if reaching age 72 before December 31, 2022). Roth IRAs do not have RMDs during the owner's lifetime.
The RMD amount is calculated by dividing the account balance as of December 31 of the previous year by a life expectancy factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. The factor increases with age, meaning the required distribution as a percentage of the account balance increases over time.
Failure to take the full RMD by the deadline results in a penalty of 25% of the amount not withdrawn (reducible to 10% if corrected promptly). Proper RMD planning is essential for managing retirement income and minimizing tax consequences.
