How It Works
Division is one of the basic arithmetic operations. Long division determines the quotient and remainder of a division problem, providing calculation steps and the result in both integer and decimal form.
Division is one of the basic arithmetic operations, along with multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Division can be thought of as the number of times a given number goes into another number. A division problem has three main parts: the dividend (number being divided), the divisor (number that divides), and the quotient (result). The dividend is the total number of objects, the divisor is the desired number of groups, and the quotient is the number of objects within each group.
To perform long division: (1) Starting from left to right, divide the first digit in the dividend by the divisor. (2) If the first digit can't be divided, write 0 above it. (3) Continue by dividing the divisor into the number formed by the previous and subsequent digit. (4) Subtract, then bring down the following digit. (5) Add a decimal point after the quotient and add 0s to form new dividends.
