The density of gravel varies depending on the type and size of the stone. Common gravel densities range from 1.2 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard. Pea gravel is typically lighter (around 1.2 tons/yd³), while crushed stone is heavier (around 1.5-1.7 tons/yd³).
