Fabric GSM Calculator
Calculate fabric weight in grams per square meter
How It Works
Calculate fabric weight in grams per square meter (GSM) — the most important quality parameter in textiles.
GSM (Grams per Square Meter) is a fundamental fabric quality metric that defines the weight of fabric per unit area. It directly affects fabric cost, thickness, durability, and end-use classification. Higher GSM indicates heavier, thicker fabric suitable for winter wear, while lower GSM indicates lightweight fabric for summer garments.
GSM is measured using a circular cutter (typically 100 cm²) and a precision balance. The sample is cut from the fabric, weighed, and the value is extrapolated to grams per square meter. GSM testing is performed during fabric inspection, production planning, and costing estimation. Common GSM ranges: 30-150 (lightweight), 150-250 (medium weight), 250-400+ (heavyweight).
